A signing ceremony for the commercialization of the Large AI Model and Intelligent System for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Diagnosis and Treatment and for university-industry collaboration was held on September 13 at the Liulin Campus of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). Chunhai Fan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Executive Dean of the Institute of Translational Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Fu Jun, a Level II Inspector at the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Zhang Cheng, Executive Vice President of Wuzhong Group; and Ma Yongqiang, Vice President of SWUFE, attended the ceremony and delivered remarks. Huazhen Lin, Director of the Center for Statistical Research at SWUFE and head of the development team, presented the project.
Chunhai Fan said that the Large AI Model and Intelligent System for TCM Diagnosis and Treatment represents a deep integration of the traditional TCM approach of syndrome differentiation and treatment with modern large-model technologies. He highlighted its significant innovative value and broad application prospects, noting its importance in advancing the modernization of TCM.
Ma Yongqiang said that the signing exemplifies SWUFE's commitment to China's innovation-driven development strategy and to the integrated advancement of education, science and technology, and talent development. He added that SWUFE will further strengthen its innovation and technology-commercialization ecosystem, integrating industry, academia, research and application across the full innovation life cycle to facilitate the commercialization of high-quality scientific and technological achievements.
Fu Jun noted that the cooperation is in line with China's policies on the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and aligns with the momentum of the "AI + TCM" sector. He expressed the hope that the two sides will accelerate model iteration and upgrades and advance the application of the technology in products, contributing to scientific and technological innovation in Sichuan.
Zhang Cheng said that the technology transfer marks an important step in Wuzhong Group's expansion into the "AI + healthcare" sector. He noted that the establishment of a joint laboratory with SWUFE represents a concrete example of deep integration among industry, academia, research and application. Wuzhong Group will leverage its strengths across the entire industrial chain to facilitate the practical application and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements.
Developed by a research team led by Professor Huazhen Lin at SWUFE, the Large AI Model and Intelligent System for TCM Diagnosis and Treatment is backed by full and independent intellectual property rights, features distinctive technological advantages, and closely aligns with China's efforts to advance the intelligent development of TCM. The project has developed a large-scale, high-quality TCM dataset to support the training and validation of large AI models for TCM. It has also developed large AI models for tongue diagnosis, medical consultation and prescription generation, and established an intelligent diagnosis and treatment system that enables coordinated operation throughout the entire diagnostic and treatment process.
The system combines low power consumption with high performance, making it suitable for deployment on terminal devices. Its application is expected to help address challenges in preserving and passing on TCM expertise, standardizing TCM practices, and alleviating shortages of TCM practitioners in primary-level healthcare settings. It will advance the intelligent and standardized development of TCM diagnosis and treatment technologies and contribute to the high-quality development of the TCM industry.
Ma Yongqiang and Zhang Cheng signed the technology transfer agreement for the Large AI Model and Intelligent System for TCM Diagnosis and Treatment on behalf of the two parties. Guo Jianjun, Dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science at SWUFE, and Yang Shanshan, General Manager of the Investment and Development Department of Wuzhong Group, signed a strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.
Under the agreement, the two sides will establish a joint laboratory dedicated to intelligent research, focusing on areas including large AI models for healthcare and intelligent risk management in economics and finance. The laboratory will develop domain-specific AI models, jointly train high-caliber professionals, and promote the industrial application and commercialization of research outcomes.
Yao He, Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology, as well as representatives from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology and SWUFE's Office of Scientific Research, attended the ceremony.
