Lecture Preview

This talk will present an overview of the work of Liang Shuming, in light of recent scholarship on this important historical figure. It will present some of the key ideas developed by Liang, particularly in his well-known work, Eastern and Western Cultures and their Philosophies. In this work, Liang compares three distinct cultural traditions, which he broadly characterizes as Chinese, Indian and Western. I will examine some of the features of this comparative framework and offer some critical thoughts. I finish by outlining a new translation project, to produce the first English translation of this work, and consider some of the methodological and philosophical choices made in the translation process.
