Roberto A. Valdeón，member of Academia Europaea,is a Professor at the University of Oviedo, Spain, the Editor-in-Chief of Perspectives, and the General Editor of Benjamins Translation Library. He has published more than 120 articles in Language and Intercultural Communication, Across Languages and Culture, Meta and so on. He is an Honorary Professor at some of the most prestigious universities in China, such as Jinan University, Nankai University, Beijing International Studies University, and lectures regularly.
Lecture Preview
In this talk, I will discuss the role of intercultural pragmatics, particularly in relation to translation, as an alternative to the traditional and artificial dichotomy language/culture. Pragmatics was first discussed at some length by authors like Eugene Nida. Although in the West Nida has been criticized (particularly in the US, e.g. Venuti, Gentzler), he was among the first to discuss the importance of context. I will present some of the tenets of pragmatics and their significance for translators using examples from various genres. I will argue that a sound knowledge of the differences between cultural can benefit translators and intercultural mediators.
